Indian Stereotypes

Hi,

Tamil Murasu, the Singapore's National Tamil Paper runs its weekly youth page called "Illayar Murasu" every thursday.

We discuss various "controversial" social issues, such as gangsterism, discrimination of the dark complexioned girls, teenage suicide, violent computer games etc.

This week's Illayar Murasu, will be discussing the stereotypes that Indians face in Singapore.

Two of them being "Alcoholics" and "Wife-beaters".

Some of the question we have put across to fellow youth regarding this topic are

- Have you faced problems with such stereotypes?
- Have you encountered other stereotypes?
- How did you deal with the stereotypes?

Cheers.

Stereotype with those who have tatoos. They are often looked upon as troublemakers and violent pple. Problems faced would be of hearing from those who have obvious tatoos that they are unable 2 find proper jobs despite adequate qulifications. outlook ruins opportunities. 2 curb this stereotype, projects such as yellow ribbon helps, but on top of that awareness should be created amongst public that just like other art expression as well and does not necessarily link to ganasterism. pple do take tatoo in as a form of art and its only right that we respect their perspective.

Q1:yes.i have faced problems of such stereotypes.

Q2: yesh ii have encountered stereotypes like drunkards and emotionally affected people.emotionally wise.

Q3:i would talk to them rather than sending them to professional counseling. it is a much better way of dealing with them rather then gettin ourselves involved with them physically[fighting].

hi illayar murasu...

i find indian stereotypes is a very good topic to discuss about.. i think indians husband do abuse their wifes for money or sex and they also waste those money in buying drugs and alcohol...this husbands seriouly don't need to marry 1st of all and should have the courage to work and bring up the family...i saw behind the close door in channel 5...they showed a husband who forced his wife to have sex with his friend for money...his wife actually rejected but later she was forced...i felt so bad and traumatised that there are still people who abuse their wife so terribly...i think by discussing this topic it shows a social awarness to all and you can also include problem solving tips...so those people who are helpless they can know how to conclude their problems...i am looking forward for the topic discussion on PHRANK CALLS!

Yes, I agree with this statement of indian stereotypes. People tend to think that indians are usally problem creaters and trouble makers. I heard from a fren tat tutors in tuition centres avoid taking up tuition assignments at indian homes due to their '' fear'' of not getting paid regularly. So such thoughts on indians must be abolished. Awareness and open mindness must be created in order to avoid any complications in a society like spore. Spore is a microcosm of racial & religious harmony. we have to transcend the differences amongst us or else in future there may be dark clouds gathering on the social front of our nation. We can take a leaf from counrties like England, US also. One thing to remember, we r opening up to the world and the influx of foreigners to our nation had been on a rise over the yrs. So it is a high time for us to realise that we r moving from an Asian society from a rainbow spread. So we respect others and others will follow the same
