Sex and the Indian Youth

Dear All,

We’re conducting a survey on sex and the Indian youth(in Singapore) for the Youth Page in Tamil Murasu. As such, we would like to hear your thoughts on the topic.

We understand that it is a sensitive topic, and would like to inform you that ALL INFORMATION WOULD BE KEPT STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL.

The questions are as follows:

- What does sex mean to you?
- Do you think premarital sex is wrong? Why?
- In your opinion, what is the right age to start having sex?
- Have you had sex before? If so, at what age did it first happen?
- How was the person involved related to you?
- How long did you know the person for before you had sex with him/her?
- Where did you first have sex? (Location) Can you name some of the places you had sex subsequently?
- Why did you have sex?
- How did the whole first experience feel? What were the subsequent times like?
- Did you use protection? Why?
- Were/Are you aware of the risks involved? (Eg, pregnancy, STDs etc)
- Have you been sexually active since then?
- How often do you have sex?
- Do you have regular partners? If so, how many?
- Why do you have sex regularly?
- Is it important to you to use protection every single time? Why?
- Are your parents aware of your sexual activities?
- What would their reaction be if they found out?
- Have you had sex education before? If so, where and when?

Indian Stereotypes

Hi,

Tamil Murasu, the Singapore's National Tamil Paper runs its weekly youth page called "Illayar Murasu" every thursday.

We discuss various "controversial" social issues, such as gangsterism, discrimination of the dark complexioned girls, teenage suicide, violent computer games etc.

This week's Illayar Murasu, will be discussing the stereotypes that Indians face in Singapore.

Two of them being "Alcoholics" and "Wife-beaters".

Some of the question we have put across to fellow youth regarding this topic are

- Have you faced problems with such stereotypes?
- Have you encountered other stereotypes?
- How did you deal with the stereotypes?
